Quirky Glamping In Wales

In the last decade the UK has seen a rapid trend taking over the tourism sector… glamping! 

Seeking an alternative style of holiday is no longer something for the intrepid traveller, there’s no need to go East to stay in a Mongolian Yurt or West to stay in Native American Tipi (or Teepee as many spell it!. ) You can now do this not far from home!

Glamping appeals to many as a half-way house between pitching your own tent and a comfy hotel stay away. You get a chance to wake up feeling close to nature, hear the rain on the canvas, experience a campfire with marshmallows and have a comfy bed, lighting without a torch… and not worry about whether the zip was closed all the way up the tent!

It strikes me as funny now then when I was 16 (20 years ago), and my parents Fran and Tony decided to put up the first Tipi as a means of self-catering holiday, we had to use many sentences to explain the concept…. “It’s like a stay in a tent… but we have put up the tent and everything you’ll need is here so you don't need to bring anything…. it’s camping - but easier!” Nowadays we just tell people we have a glamping site and job done! 

We have moved on from Tipi’s alone, and our business name ‘Larkhill Tipis and Yurts’ is actually a simplification. Rather than just providing glamping accomodation we have sought to provide a quirkier twist and have ourselves made many different nomadic structures from around the world. For example our two yurts are inspired by two different cultures.

The Mongolian Ger as the name suggests is a traditional home in Mongolia and our Bentwood Yurt originates from the Kyrgyz nomads. Our largest yurt, isn’t actually a Yurt at all but a structure called an Alachigh, a nomadic structure used by the Shahsavan pastoral nomadic people who are located in the northwest of Iran.

Our only Tipi (or Teepee) is the only structure up for part of the year. Our Tipi design comes from the indigenous people of the central Plains of the North American continent, Native Americans. 

Last but not least we have our hybrid Lavvu. This structure was built by us and inspired by the dwellings of the Sami Tribe of Scandinavia. 

If you have taken some time to read our reviews, you will have also noticed that our quirkiness is definitely not restricted to our accommodation. Many describe Larkhill as a magical location, unique, creative and full of character. We are not an ‘off the shelf’ glamping site and have included a sculpture park amongst the woodland, decorating the site with magical paths and quirky facilities.
