Funghi Course October 2022

If you were out and about in the later months of last year (2021) you may have noticed more fungi around than usual. This is definitely something that we have experienced here at Larkhill. The unusually warmer weather for the time of year and our damp woodland seemed to be the perfect location for fungi to thrive. A few types of fungi that were noticed here were Plums and Custard, Jelly Tooth, Deceivers, Earthballs, Crested Coral, Conifer Blueing Bracket and Wrinkled Club.

Last October we were really fortunate to have a chap called Mike Bright come and stay with us, a fungi enthusiast who has very kindly offered to come back and run a one-day “Fungi for beginners” course to teach us how to identify fungi for ourselves.  

This will take place on the weekend of the 7th and 8th October. The morning of this course will be spent walking around our woodland and glamping site, identifying the various fungi that reside here and the afternoon will be spent at another nearby location to see if we can find more.

It will not be a foraging course although he may occasionally touch on edibility. The focus would be on how fungi live and operate and how to identify them for ecological and environmental purposes. People can be obsessed with the one question of ‘can I eat it’? So the focus would be on the beauty of them as living organisms rather than 'does it taste good'.

Mike started off himself  many years ago as a forager but has since become emotionally attached to mushrooms so rarely eats them (wild ones) any more! He’s not charging for this - so it will be just your accommodation cost.
