There’s nothing we like better than seeing a group of friends sitting outside our log cabin cooking together whilst catching up. 

Setting Up Your Campfire

Ready to get that fire going? We have designated fire pits to keep things safe and easy. Here’s how to set up your campfire:

• Gather the right wood: Use seasoned firewood and kindling for a clean, efficient burn. We have wood dedicated to outdoor fires, pine that burns quickly to get your campfire going.
• Build the fire: Arrange your kindling in a teepee (tipi) shape, light it up with matches or a lighter (we do provide firelighters).  As the flames get going, add larger pieces of wood gradually.
• Manage the flames: Keep your fire at a moderate level for cooking, adding wood as needed to maintain that steady heat.

Cooking Tips and Techniques

With your campfire crackling away, it’s time to get cooking. Here are some fun techniques and ideas to make your campfire cooking memorable:

Grilling

Grilling over an open flame is a classic choice. We have portable grill grates which are fab for cooking up:

• Burgers and hot dogs: These are must-haves for any camping trip and cook up quickly over direct heat.
• Vegetable skewers: Skewer up some bell peppers, mushrooms and onions for a tasty side dish.

Foil Packets

Foil packets are a super easy way to cook a whole meal over the fire:

• Fish and Vegetables: Wrap fresh fish with lemon slices, herbs and your favorite veggies in foil. Cook it right on the coals for a delicious, steamed treat.
• Potatoes and Herbs: Slice up potatoes, season them with herbs and seal them in foil. Toss them in the embers for a crispy, flavourful side.

Cast Iron Cooking

We have some great pans for using above the campfire including a huge paella dish:

• One-pot stews: Make hearty stews or chili by simmering ingredients slowly over the fire for a comforting meal.
• Pancakes: Start your day right with pancakes cooked in a skillet, topped with wild berries or syrup.
• A huge one pan fry up for brekkie!

BBQ

If you don’t fancy the old-fashioned campfire then we have a gas BBQ and charcoal BBQ’s available to use here (it’s recommended you bring your own charcoal).

Safety and Clean-Up

Remember, safety is key when cooking over a campfire. Always keep an eye on the fire, have a bucket of water or sand nearby, and make sure the fire is completely out before leaving. Also, be sure to clean up after yourself by putting rubbish and food scraps in the designated bins to help keep Larkhill beautiful. Recycling is a biggie for us!
